Recently, Bre Haizlip (“Dr. Bre”) gave an end of year motivational Zoom talk to the moms of The Local Moms Network. We all loved her down-to-earth advice and her commit to helping woman. For this week’s Meet a Mom interview, we spoke to Dr. Bre about her counseling and teaching career, her activism, some of her favorite mantras, and more.
Tell us a little bit about you! I am an Interior Designer. Coming from a modest background and being the youngest of four girls, I learned very quickly how to turn trash into treasure. I discovered garage sales, flea markets and thrift stores were full of priceless pieces that would make any room tell a story and feel unique. I took this early knowledge and refined it with a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and became a Registered Interior Designer with the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners. That accompanied with 14 years of industry experience in commercial, corporate, retail and residential design has molded me into the designer I am today.
We are here to perfect our small Thanksgiving For Two game plan! For many reasons, throughout the years, my husband and I have been alone for the holidays. We lived far away from home, plus my husband’s parents are split between the two coasts! Not to ever forget the holidays I had to miss traveling due to being pregnant or with a newborn. Cooking for two is my specialty. I’ve been writing this blog called Dessert for Two for 10 years, and I have written 4 cookbooks all about cooking for two. You have come to the right place for your small Thanksgiving dinner ideas!
Kathryn Richardson is the founder of YearCheer, a holiday subscription box that each month contains the items that help busy families decorate, connect, and celebrate holidays throughout the year. Designed for kids age three to tween, YearCheer boxes come with easy decorations, fun activities, games and different surprises each holiday. She calls it “every mom’s secret weapon for creating holiday magic.”
I am SO excited to be joining Frisco Area Moms! Since becoming a mom four years ago, I wanted to be a part of a community of incredible, strong, and supportive moms and I have definitely found that group within Frisco Area Moms! The community that supports FAM is wonderful and I can’t wait to share this journey of mommyhood with each and every one of you! I am looking forward to meeting as many moms in our community as possible and making new friends along the way!
There are as many ways to homeschool as there are ways to raise children. Find the freedom to unashamedly do what works for you. That being said, here are a few steps I would recommend for getting started and a few resources to help you along your way.
As moms, pregnancy and childbirth is a magical and also, complicated time. We look forward to meeting our child, but also want to be sure we’re making the best decisions, along with our healthcare provider, to get them here as safely as possible. Black moms (as well as American Indian and Alaskan Native) also face a greater risk for themselves; they are 2 to 3 times as likely to die from pregnancy related causes as white moms. In an effort to understand this important issue, we reached out to one of the top experts on this subject, Dr. Alicia D. Bonaparte, an Associate Professor of Sociology at Pitzer College and co-editor of the anthology, Birthing Justice: Black Women, Pregnancy, and Childbirth.
Where do we go from here? What’s the solution? Why did it take this particular moment in time for everyone to wake up? Did the [COVID-19] pandemic and our lack of movement or distractions result in forcing everyone to pay attention to what we have been screaming for 400 years? As someone who’s a master of my emotions and knows for the most part how to re-center and refocus this week—my emotions have been out of control. I am mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually exhausted.
